Smith started her acting career at the age of forty, and appeared in films such as Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), Romancing the Stone (1984, with Vince Deadrick), The Bad Seed (1985, with Richard Kiley, David Ogden Stiers, and Chad Allen), Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988, with W. Morgan Sheppard, Phil Rubenstein, and Dick Miller), Who's Harry Crumb? (1989, with Manny Perry), and Love Hurts (1991).
She guest starred also in television series such as Cheers (1982, with Keone Young), Highway to Heaven (1984, with Daniel Davis), The A-Team (1984, with Dwight Schultz, Richard Lynch, Stephen Liska, and Susanne Wasson), St. Elsewhere (1985, with Deborah May and Gary Armagnac), Moonlighting (1986, with Whoopi Goldberg), Growing Pains (1988 & 1989, with Andrew Koenig and Betty McGuire), Night Court (1985 & 1989, with John Larroquette, Roy Brocksmith, Kelly Connell, and Bruce French), and Married... with Children (1989).
