Eugene Cernan was a 20th century American astronaut in NASA's Apollo program. He was a crewmember, along with Stafford and Young, on Apollo 10. As well, he was a crewmember, along with Evans and Schmitt, on Apollo 17. During the mission, Cernan was photographed standing next to the American flag on the lunar surface. In 1986, OMNI magazine selected this photo of Cernan for the cover of their May issue. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In 2143, the assignment patches for Apollo 10 and Apollo 17 were on display at the 602 Club. Both patches bore his last name. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; ENT: "First Flight")
