Delta Flyer with dynametric tailfins

Delta Flyer concept incorporating dynametric tailfins

Dynametric tailfins were a design feature which Tom Paris had hoped to add while designing the Delta Flyer in 2375. According to him, they would add "sleekness and a sense of power" to the shuttlecraft.

While working on the craft's structural integrity, Paris attempted to add the tailfins when plans for the Delta Flyer were being considered, but they were quickly removed by Tuvok, who stated that they were purely decorative embellishments which served no practical purpose, and that they were not making a "hot rod". (VOY: "Extreme Risk")

Based on Paris' comments, the tailfins might also have been involved in making the craft "ultra-responsive".
