Habitual use of a deadly drug

Drug addiction was the condition of being dependent on certain drugs. Voluntary addiction to drugs was a recurrent theme in many cultures. (TNG: "Symbiosis")

Earth tobacco was a deadly drug capable of destroying the internal organs. It was nonetheless used because it was highly addictive. (DS9: "Little Green Men")

In 2154, T'Pol became addicted to Trellium-D. When asked by Dr. Phlox when she realized she was addicted, she explained that two days previous, she experienced agitation, anxiety and withdrawal symptoms upon being unable to access Enterprise NX-01's supply in the cargo bay. (ENT: "Damage")

The entire Ornaran population was addicted to felicium, originally introduced as a vaccine to a plague that hit them in the 22nd century. Until the 24th century, they continued to confuse the withdrawal pains for the continued existence of this plague. (TNG: "Symbiosis")

In 2370, a hologram of Dr. Phlox explained to Chef (William T. Riker) that if Trip Tucker hadn't agreed to Vulcan neuro-pressure treatments from T'Pol, he would've become addicted to sedatives instead. (ENT: "These Are the Voyages...")

The Jem'Hadar were addicted to ketracel-white. In 2372, one named Goran'Agar believed himself cured of his addiction, surmising that something about the planet Bopak III had cured him. This prompted him to ask for a stranded Julian Bashir to help him break the addiction of his fellow Jem'Hadar. In reality, his own body was secreting the drug. (DS9: "The Abandoned", "Hippocratic Oath")

In 2373, Miles O'Brien expressed his desire to wean pregnant surrogate mother Kira Nerys off caffeine rather than poisoning her with Quark's coffee substitute, Quarktajino. Hearing this, Nerys complained that he made sound like an addict. Jadzia Dax added that the major only drank two a day. O'Brien clarified that he didn't want his son to be born with a caffeine habit. (DS9: "Nor the Battle to the Strong")
