Engalla was born in San Francisco, California and acted since he was six years old. He studied acting under Jean Robinson, G. Craig Jackson, and Lonny Chapman, after he made his first experiences in several commercials and educationals. Mainly a stage actor, Engalla has portrayed various characters in plays such as The Crucible, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Mousetrap, Father's Day, Nuts, and The Sunshine Boys.
Among his acting credits are the horror comedy Repossessed (1990, with Willie Garson, Barbara Alyn Woods, and Ian Abercrombie), the television thriller In the Arms of a Killer (1992, with Michael Nouri, Liam Sullivan, Steve Susskind, and Henry Kingi, Sr.), the television series thirtysomething, and the Untold Stories of the ER episode A Real Pain in the Neck (2006).
Engalla received thank and special thanks credits for several animated films, including Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Treasure Planet (2002), and Chicken Little (2005). He also worked in the animation department for the research library for films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Meet the Robinsons (2007), and the restored versions of Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp.
Engalla was married twice. His first wife was Star Trek VI casting associate Wendy Wassall, with whom he was married between 1980 and 1996. The couple has two children. His second wife, between 2001 and 2007, was Kimberly Miller.
