Picard Crusher and Dirgo on Lambda Paz

A directional marker left in the sand

A directional marker was an object left behind as an indication of the direction in which one had gone.

In 2269, Montgomery Scott followed the directional marker of James T. Kirk and Spock with a small hand-held device that pointed towards an underwater fern bed. (TAS: "The Ambergris Element")

Jean-Luc Picard left a directional marker when Wesley Crusher and him crash landed in the Nenebek along with its captain Dirgo in the desert sand of Lambda Paz before they made their way to shelter. When the USS Enterprise-D found the downed craft, the marker led them to their location. (TNG: "Final Mission")
