Dialysis is used to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function.

In 1986, while looking for Commander Pavel Chekov at Mercy Hospital, Dr. Leonard McCoy assisted an elderly woman who had kidney dialysis by giving her medication from the 23rd century.
