A destroyer was a term from World War 2 used to describe a fast relativley small ship.
A destroyer was a small compact ship. It was similar to a frigate. Jadzia Dax once refered to Cardassian Galor class as destroyers during Operation Return. Though technically they were cruisers Jadzia Dax was probably correct if she was comparing them to their better armed an armoured Jem'Hadar counterparts seeing as Galor class destroyers were easily out gunned by Federation Galaxy class starships.
