The Denorios belt

The Denorios Belt is a charged plasma field located in the Bajor system, orbiting the primary star. It has long been a navigational hazard for local shipping. Akorem Laan disappeared in the Belt in 2172 following an ion storm, though he later returned no worse for wear. Around the same time, a ship carrying Kai Taluno was disabled for several days in the Belt. Following his rescue, Taluno claimed that the "heavens opened up" and nearly consumed his vessel.

For many years, the Belt was prone to severe neutrino disturbances in a localized area without explanation. Five of the Tears of the Prophets were found in that area. In addition, in 2337, a vessel of unknown origin was discovered there, carrying a member of a previously unencountered species.

All of these incidents were explained in 2369, when Commander Benjamin Sisko and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax discovered the first stable wormhole know to exist in the Belt. Shortly thereafter, the space station Deep Space 9 was moved from Bajor orbit to its present position in the Belt, some 20,000 kilometers from the newly-discovered anomaly.
