De Agostini S.p.A., often referenced to as DeAgostini (without the spacing), was founded in 1901 and is an Italy-based holding company that specializes in publishing magazines and collectibles, often focusing on "partwork" publications, for a number of licensed entertainment properties such as Star Wars and Marvel, among many others and including Star Trek. These publications are published in sixty-six countries primarily under the De Agostini Publishing, De Agostini Editore, Editions Atlas, and Planeta De Agostini imprints.

As far as the Star Trek franchise was concerned, it was De Agostini who published the edited Japanese-language versions of the GE Fabbri productions for Japan, which consisted of the Star Trek Fact Files and Star Trek: Best Episode Collection, followed up by the company's own initiated, though short-lived The Official Star Trek The Next Generation: Build the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D partwork publication. As of 2014, the company publishes Eaglemoss Collections' Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection partwork in Japan.

For the former three publications, the Japanese branch of De Agostini had entered into a joint venture with GE Fabbri, whose staff was responsible for the editing and writing whereas the Japanese branch was responsible for translation, marketing and production. To monitor the cooperation on these publications, Fabbri's chief editor Tim Leng resided in Tokyo for a number of years.

For its home country of Italy, the company had already published a truncated Italian-language version of the Star Trek Fact Files.
