...as Professor James Moriarty

Daniel Davis (born 26 November 1945; age 78) played the role of the holographic Professor James Moriarty in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes "Elementary, Dear Data" and "Ship in a Bottle".

Davis had recurring roles in the television series Dynasty and The Practice, but he is best known for playing Niles, the butler, on The Nanny. As a stage actor, he has had several notable roles including a Tony Award nomination in 2000 for the play Wrong Mountain and the role Georges in the 2004 Broadway revival of the musical La Cage Aux Folles.

Interestingly, he once also played the captain of the Enterprise… the USS Enterprise, in the 1990 film The Hunt for Red October, which also featured Gates McFadden, Timothy Carhart, Boris Lee Krutonog, and Ronald Guttman.

Although Davis is American and speaks with a distinctive Southern accent, many viewers who only knew him from The Nanny and his TNG appearances assumed he was a British actor due to his thoroughly-convincing British accents he used.
