In algebra, the cube root of a number was any number that produced its original number when cubed.

In 2374, Jack asked Julian Bashir what the cube root of 329 was. Bashir responded with 6.903, impressing Lauren so much as to say "Very good. And you didn't even use your fingers," and thus, satisfying her need to identify him as a mutant, just like them. (DS9: "Statistical Probabilities")
