Theoretical cosmology was a branch of astronomy which theorized the structure, origins, evolution, and space-time relationships of the universe. A scientist who studied the metaphysics of the universe in the field of cosmology were known as cosmologists.

Crewman Mortimer Harren studied this field. He held five advanced degrees in theoretical cosmology and needed one year of hands-on experience in order to qualify for the Institute of Cosmology on Orion I, so he joined the crew of the USS Voyager in 2371. He had worked on Schlezholt's Theory of Multiple Big Bangs and studies in dark matter proto-comets.

When Captain Kathryn Janeway reviewed Harren's personnel file, she learned that she grew up on Vico V, adding, "No wonder you became a cosmologist," as the planet was known to have the "wildest sky in the Alpha Quadrant." (VOY: "Good Shepherd")
