Delos coronae

The corona of the star Delos

For the novel of the same name, please see Corona (novel).

The corona is the outermost layer of a star's atmosphere, made of plasma and hotter than the underlying photosphere.

The corona of the star Delos was visible to the crew of the Enterprise-D when they masked the photosphere on the viewscreen. (TNG: "Symbiosis")

During the Klingon Civil War in 2368, Captain Kurn of the IKS Hegh'ta destroyed two Birds-of-Prey loyal to the House of Duras by taking his ship into a star's corona. He then engaged the Hegh'ta's warp drive just above the photosphere, causing a solar flare that destroyed the two pursuing ships. (TNG: "Redemption II")

The metaphasic shield, developed by Dr. Reyga in 2369, was designed to protect a spacecraft against the effects of a star's corona. It was successfully tested by Dr. Beverly Crusher in the shuttlecraft Justman in the corona of the star Veytan. (TNG: "Suspicions") The technology was used in 2370 to protect the USS Enterprise-D when it hid from Lore's rogue Borg ship within a star's corona. (TNG: "Descent, Part II")

In 2371, the USS Defiant sent a probe into the corona of the Trialan sun, to investigate its anomalous fusion cycle. After an initial high orbit, the probe managed to descend an additional 1,000 kilometers into the corona to take scans of the star's core. (DS9: "Meridian")

During the Q Civil War in 2373, the female Q showed the crew of the USS Voyager how to modify its shields to withstand an imploding star's corona, so as to enter the Q Continuum via a negative density false vacuum. (VOY: "The Q and the Grey")

In 2375, Voyager contained the radiation from the explosion of a crippled Malon export vessel by guiding it into the corona of an O-type star. (VOY: "Juggernaut")
