For the ENT episode of the same name, please see "Cold Station 12".

Cold Station 12, also known as C-12, was a top-secret facility located in an asteroid in the 22nd century. It was jointly operated and staffed by a crew of eleven Humans and the Denobulans under the auspices of the Interspecies Medical Exchange. The facility was used to store hazardous viruses and pathogens for research purposes, as well as over 1,800 embryos of 20th century Augments, left over from the Eugenics Wars.

In the 2130s, Doctor Arik Soong had worked at Cold Station 12 as senior medical director until he stole nineteen of the Augment embryos. Soong intended to create a new race of "supermen" and took the embryos to the Trialas system, where he raised them as his children.

At some point prior to his posting on Earth, Dr. Phlox had been assigned to C-12 for a few months, and considered himself familiar with their security protocols and technology.

By 2154, Doctor Jeremy Lucas had become the facility's senior medical director. Soong returned to C-12 in May of that year in a stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey, along with his "children," to take the remaining embryos. Enterprise NX-01 arrived in an attempt to stop Soong, forcing him to take hostages. Malik, one of the Augments, brutally interrogated Dr. Lucas, and even killed one of his staff members using Symbalene blood burn, in an attempt to extract the access code that would grant them access to the rest of the Augment embryos.

Captain Archer led a boarding party to C-12 in an attempt to stop Soong, but they were soon taken prisoner as well. When Malik threatened to kill Doctor Phlox, Lucas' old friend, Lucas relented and input the access code, granting Soong access to the embryos. Enterprise attempted to destroy the station rather than let Soong escape with the embryos, but Soong and the Augments were able to escape aboard the Bird-of-Prey. Before they left, however, Malik set the stasis fields containing the pathogens in the station to collapse, hoping to kill everyone aboard. (ENT: "Cold Station 12")

Fortunately, Captain Archer was able to reroute the power relays and protect the main core of the station. Afterward, Doctor Lucas and his staff remained behind to begin decontamination procedures, which Lucas estimated would take a year. (ENT: "The Augments")

Technical information[]

The senior medical director had an office aboard the station. Since Soong's time in that position in the 2130s, the lights in the office would flicker every two hours. Despite requests for Starfleet to repair it, it had not been repaired by 2154.

Life support power relays could be accessed from level 4.

When Malik set all of the station's stasis fields to shut down, it could only be prevented at the primary junction, a distant climb through a Jefferies tube-like central core from the lab. (ENT: "Cold Station 12") Archer was able to isolate the lab from the ventilation grid by diverting the secondary relays, though it left the central core in danger. Archer was able to escape when Enterprise destroyed exterior hatch J-9 at the top of the central core, which left the core exposed to space. (ENT: "The Augments")

Background information[]

In the final draft script of "Cold Station 12", the facility was described as being built into the largest asteroid in an asteroid field. The station's "control hub" was described thus; "This is the central hub of the station, a large circular command center around which are built several bio-containment cells."

According to the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), Cold Station 12 was located in the Beta Quadrant.
