The Code of Hammurabi was a 2nd millennium BC collection of laws from the ancient Middle East. This code was named after King Hammurabi, who established these laws during his reign.
Laws pertaining to the rights of the accused were included in this code. According to Attorney-at-Law Samuel T. Cogley in 2267, these were the "rights of the accused to a trial by his peers, to be represented by counsel, the rights of cross-examination" and "to be confronted by the witnesses against" the accused.
