Name: | Cobalt |
Symbol: | Co |
Atomic number: | 27 |
Cobalt is chemical element with the symbol Co and atomic number 27. Cobalt is a ferromagnetic metal. It is a naturally occurring element, and is commony found in a number of ores. Cobalt is used in numerous alloys, and some cobalt-based materials are also used in weapons.
The antimatter relays of an NX-class starship are lined with a platinum-cobalt alloy (ENT: "The Xindi").
In 2154, the Enterprise (NX-01) carried 18 kilos of tritanium-cobalt, of which 9 were used to bribe guards in releasing slaves on the Verex III Orion processing station (ENT: "Borderland").
The Lysian Central Command space station was armed with 39 cobalt-fusion warheads (TNG: "Conundrum"). Other military uses of cobalt include cobalt-thorium devices, cobalt bombs and the nerve agent cobalt diselenide. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", TOS: "Obsession", DS9: "For the Uniform")
The body of the Soong-type android Data included 11.8 kilos of molybdenum-cobalt alloys. (TNG: "The Most Toys")
- According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Interactive Technical Manual, written by Michael Okuda and Rick Sternbach, a metallic alloy of tungsten-cobalt-magnesium was used to form the structural core of a warp coil. It provided the rigidity and high heat tolerance required due to the prolonged exposure to warp plasma.
Di- and Tri-cobalt
Di-cobalt is a high-yield explosive. In 2153, pirates attached a beacon with a di-cobalt explosive to the outer hull of the ECS Horizon. A similar device had been attached to the ECS Constellation a few weeks earlier.
The insurgents on Coridan were known for taking hostages to acquire weapons, including dicobalt explosives (ENT: "Shadows of P'Jem").
Tri-cobalt is a powerful explosive, used in various weapons, like Starfleet's tri-cobalt devices (VOY: "Caretaker"). The Maquis also had access to tricobalt explosives (DS9:"Blaze of Glory").
In 2267, the Eminian Union classified the USS Enterprise as 'destroyed' when it was attacked by virtual tricobalt satellites while in orbit of Eminiar VII (TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon").
The same year, time-travelling Klingon operative Arne Darvin planted a tricobalt explosive in a fake tribble, with the intent of assassinating James T. Kirk, who would reveal Darvin's true identity otherwise (DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations").
