The concept of circumnavigation refers to the navigation of a aircraft sailing vessel along the entire circumference of a planet.

In 1937, Amelia Earhart, one of Earth's first female aircraft pilots, attempted to fly around the world. On July 2nd, she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, took off from New Guinea, east around the equator, but disappear somewhere over the South Seas. (VOY: "The 37's")

Prior to the mid-22nd century, the Kumari was the first ice cutter to circumnavigate Andoria. (ENT: "Babel")

The concept would continue into space travel, when, in mid-2373, the USS Valiant was on a mission to circumnavigate the Federation before returning home, however did not complete the mission due to the outbreak of the Dominion War. (DS9: "Valiant")
