Lieutenant Commander Christopher Hobson was a Human Starfleet officer who served as Data's first officer aboard the USS Sutherland during Captain Jean-Luc Picard's blockade of the Klingon-Romulan border in 2368.
His first official act in that position was to request a transfer off the ship since he regarded Data as an inappropriate commanding officer because he was an android. His attitude reflected one of racial bigotry, as he suggested that certain species were not "meant" for certain assignments, such as a Klingon being a counselor. However, after Data made an astute command decision, detecting Romulan whereabouts, there was a hint of a newfound respect. (TNG: "Redemption II")
Christopher Hobson was played by actor Timothy Carhart.
According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, the character was named after a longtime friend of episode writer Ronald D. Moore.
