Christopher Columbus was a famed Genoese navigator and explorer who sailed for the Spanish during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Nora, a friend of Travis Mayweather's who resided on the ECS Horizon, compared Travis to Columbus and Magellan after he explained to her that the exploration feats he participated in aboard the Enterprise, which included having traveled 150 light years and visiting 22 inhabited worlds in an 18 month period. (ENT: "Horizon")

Columbus' legacy would be honored well into the 23rd century as the name of a Federation shuttlecraft assigned aboard the USS Enterprise and USS Enterprise-A. (TAS: "The Slaver Weapon"; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)
