China is a nation that existed on Earth before the formation of the United Earth Government. It is unknown whether the country survived World War III, since only a few goverments survived. Mao Zedong was an important leader of China in the 20th century.

Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu wrote The Art of War in the 2nd century BCE. (TNG: "The Last Outpost"; ENT: "Divergence")

The Sung dynasty was a period in Chinese history. Captain Jean Luc Picard gave Lutan, the ruler of Ligon II, a horse statue from the Sung dynasty as a gift when the USS Enterprise-D visited the planet in 2364. (TNG: "Code of Honor"}

Seven women fell victim to the Redjac entity in this country in 1932. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold"}

In 2365, Captain Picard reminded Wesley Crusher that China was thought to be a myth until Marco Polo traveled there, comparing the country to the equally mythical Iconia. (TNG: "Contagion"}

Biddle Coleridge believed that even people in China were watching reports of the Bell Riots in 2024. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part II")

Spock once stated that the Vulcans have a proverb that states "Only Nixon could go to China". This is a reference to United States President Richard M. Nixon's policy of easing relations between the US and China, which culminated in his 1972 trip to that country. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Harry Kim once recited the ancient Chinese curse "May you live in interesting times," upon being asked about Neelix's food by Kathryn Janeway. (VOY: "The Cloud")

Background

The writer's guide for Star Trek: Voyager stated that Harry Kim was of Chinese ancestry (like actor Garrett Wang who played him), but he was not an inhabitant of China -- it was later revealed that his family resided in South Carolina.

Early drafts of Star Trek: First Contact would have said that China was a leading member of the Eastern Coalition in the Third World War, but it was decided that politics didn't really matter to the story, so the lines were cut.
