A chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) was a small domesticated avian animal native to Earth.
A hen was a female chicken, known for being closely protective of its eggs. One time when Captain Picard went on an away mission, Commander Riker strongly urged him to stay on the ship where it was safe. Captain Picard clucked at him (the sound a chicken makes) and told him to "stop being a mother hen." (TNG: "Loud As A Whisper")
In 2365, the USS Enterprise-D rescued several dozen colonists from Bringloid V, along with their many farm animals, which included several chickens. These chickens were descended from two hundred Wyandotte chickens that been carried aboard the colony ship SS Mariposa. (TNG: "Up The Long Ladder")
Chicken meat and their eggs were widely eaten on Earth and were a primary component of many Human foods, such as chicken wings and fried chicken.
Tom Paris said the preserved food by Neelix tasted more like chicken when USS Voyager was in the Void. (VOY: "The Void")
