The Cerberus system was an inhabited system. A colony was established on Cerberus by the United Federation of Planets prior to 2259. Cerberus II had a native population.
Carter Winston helped save the Federation citizens of Cerberus colony, including Joanna McCoy, from a supply shortage. (TAS: "The Survivor")
In the mid-24th century, Mark Jameson visited Cerberus II on several diplomatic missions for treaty negotiations. (TNG: "Too Short a Season")
According to Startrek.com, Cerberus was named after the Greek guardian of the gates to Hades, the great dog-like monster Cerberus. [1]
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets II"), the Cerberus system was located in non-aligned space, in the Beta Quadrant. Cerberus was a G class star with a magnitude was +5, which was the same brightness as Sol.
