A cello
The cello is an Earth musical instrument, bigger than a viola and smaller than a double bass. It is a member of the violin family.

Miles O'Brien once stated to Jake Sisko that he knew how Jake felt, while discussing Jake's desire not to go to Starfleet Academy despite his father's wishes that he joined. Miles explained that his father wanted him to be a musician, specifically a cello player. Miles explained that his father made him practice every day, until he "got to be pretty good."
