Caviar

A small bowl of caviar

Caviar was a Human delicacy from Earth, although it or the equivalent may have been popular with other species as well. It consisted of unhatched fish eggs.

In 2366, Captain Jean-Luc Picard always kept some real caviar from the Caspian Sea on the USS Enterprise-D for special occasions, such as a buffet with a Klingon exchange officer and Worf's brother Kurn, who, however, did not seem to be fond of the delicacy. (TNG: "Sins of The Father")

Captain Picard felt the replicators did not do the dish justice, and always tried to keep some on hand. Q, on the other hand, had a considerably less favorable opinion of the dish. (TNG: "Deja Q")

In 2370, Counselor Deanna Troi, beginning to feel the initial effects of her transformation from the intron virus that caused Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome that was spreading on the Enterprise-D, ordered caviar for lunch, craving something salty. (TNG: "Genesis")

In 2377, after spending time inhabiting the body of Seven of Nine, The Doctor complained that she denied herself the luxuries of life, telling her that "Instead of replicating caviar, you choose nutritional supplement 13-alpha." (VOY: "Body and Soul")

Background information[]

Fish eggs were mentioned in the final draft script of Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Corbomite Maneuver" (dated 3 May 1966), as that script referred to the Fesarius as being "in the shape of a round cluster of [...] fish eggs." This allusion was written out of the teleplay by the time a second revised final draft of the script (dated 20 May 1966) was issued.
