Carbon is a chemical element with the symbol C and atomic number 6 on the periodic table.

Compounds[]

According to Spock, "life as we know it is universally based on some combination of carbon compounds," as such, carbon-based lifeforms depended on carbon to exist. (TOS: "The Devil in the Dark"; ENT: "Observer Effect") Class M planets were identified as such for their ability to support carbon based flora and fauna. (TNG: "Angel One")

The Human body was made up of approximately 18% carbon. (TOS: "The Omega Glory") The "huge shifts" in gravity caused by the collapse of Psi 2000 caused the creation of polywater, described as "complex strings of water molecules which acquired carbon from the body and acted on the brain like alcohol." (TNG: "The Naked Now")

In 2154, Commander "Trip" Tucker and Ensign Hoshi Sato from Enterprise NX-01 were infected with a silicon-based virus on an M class planet. Doctor Phlox was unable to devise a treatment for them, because the virus was incompatible with carbon-based lifeforms. (ENT: "Observer Effect")

V'Ger believed that the crew of the USS Enterprise were "carbon units" that were "infesting" the ship. It created the Ilia probe to interact with and inspect these units. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

The borgia plant found on planet M-113 was classified as a "carbon group 3" vegetation. (TOS: "The Man Trap")

Kira Nerys told the Bajoran farmer Mullibok after supper in his cottage that he couldn't stay on Jerrado. Once the tapping started, the crust would release sulfur and carbon compounds that would make the air unbreathable. (DS9: "Progress")

Other carbon compounds included carbohydrates, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons.

Applications[]

Carbon was used in the making of carbon steel. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses"; ENT: "Storm Front")

In 2153, Arctic Archaeology Team scientist Rooney found some carbon traces in the Borg cube debris field in the Arctic Circle. (ENT: "Regeneration")

In the 24th century, carbon-70 was used in the casing of combadges along with beryllium, silicon and gold. (TNG: "Time's Arrow")

The Federation's offer to purchase the rights to the Barzan wormhole included that the Barzans were to provide the carbon compound structural elements for construction of an orbital facility. (TNG: "The Price")

The outer shell of the Dyson sphere discovered by the USS Jenolan, and later the USS Enterprise-D, had an outer shell constructed of carbon-neutronium. (TNG: "Relics")

Federation Type 8 shuttlecraft were composed of several materials, including duranium, magnesite, and carbon. (VOY: "Initiations")

The Vostigye constructed their space stations using, among other things, a carbon-60 composite. (VOY: "Real Life")
