Capella was an inhabited planetary system in the Alpha Quadrant. One of its planets was Capella IV. This system was in a sector contested by both the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the 2260s.

In the late 2250s, this system had a warp capable civilization that had or was in the process of being inducted into the United Federation of Planets.

In 2259, the location of this system was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This system's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the Federation. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Children of the Comet", "Spock Amok")

In 2267, the Federation and the Klingon Empire attempted to gain mining rights from the Capellans of Capella IV. The rare mineral topaline, vital to the life support systems of planetoid colonies, was in abundance there. The crew of the USS Enterprise secured the mining rights by treaty for the Federation. (TOS: "Friday's Child")

In 2293, the location of Capella in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled in a star chart that was in Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, okudagram)

The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. The Capella system was in or near to Cardassian space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 36) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), Capella (Alpha Aurigae) system was a quadrinary star system with a pair of G-class stars and a pair of M-class stars. In the late 24th century, it was a Federation system.
