A canar was a crystal prism used by the Haliians to focus and amplify their telepathic abilities. It was also used to establish an empathic bond between two lovers.

In 2369, Haliian Lieutenant junior grade Aquiel Uhnari used her canar when she had a brief romance with Geordi La Forge to create such a bond. With its help, the blind La Forge could see Uhnari as she really looked – not merely his imagined or VISORed image of her. (TNG: "Aquiel")
