– La'an Noonien-Singh summing up "what used to be called Canada" to James Kirk, 2022 ("Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow")

Canada was a North American country on Earth that bordered the United States. The northernmost areas of this country were located in the Arctic Circle. It was also the second largest country in the world, next to Russia.

Canada's national flag was red supporting a central white band with a red, eleven-pointed maple leaf. People or items which had their origin in this country were called Canadians. (TOS-R: "The Cage"; TNG: "Lower Decks"; DS9: "Blaze of Glory"; ENT: "First Flight") The currency was the Canadian dollar. The country's official languages were English and French, both of which appeared on its currency. (SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow")

Canadian space agency assignment patch

A Canadian Space Agency patch

In the early 21st century, Canada suffered an apparent terrorist attack when the Lake Ontario Bridge in Toronto was destroyed by an explosion soon after it was completed. The explosion was actually caused by photonic bombs planted by Sera, a time-travelling Romulan agent. She also nearly succeeding in destroying the city by the detonation of a cold fusion reactor being developed in a local facility, and when this failed, attempting to kill Khan Noonien Singh, who was being raised in the same facility. The plot was foiled by La'an Noonien-Singh and an alternate universe James T. Kirk, who was killed in the incident. (SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow")

The Canadian flag could be seen on the Ares IV model, among others.

In 2154, Jonathan Archer suggested Canada and Norway as possible locations for Hoshi Sato to take respite following the Xindi incident. (ENT: "Zero Hour")

By the 23rd century, the region formerly known as Canada was no longer named as such. Despite this fact, many people of this time and later often still referred to it as Canada. (SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow")

A 21st century-era political map of Earth was stored in the USS Enterprise's library computer in 2254. The North American continent was seen on this map. This map was among the materials viewed by the Talosians when they scanned the Enterprise computer. (TOS-R: "The Cage")

Sam Lavelle's grandfather was Canadian, and he was mistakenly informed by Ben that William T. Riker was also from that country. In an attempt at small talk, Lavelle mentioned to Riker that his grandfather was from Canada, but when he asked Riker if he grew up there too, he stated that he was actually from Alaska. Lavelle was reduced to stating that both Canada and Alaska "get a lot of snow," which Riker conceded. (TNG: "Lower Decks")

Background information[]

Premiere[]

Canada was the first location where Star Trek ever aired. The series premiere of Star Trek: The Original Series, "The Man Trap", aired in Canada on the CTV network on September 6, 1966, two days before it aired on NBC in the United States. (See, e.g., Montreal Gazette, Sept. 6, 1966, p. 36.) At the time, Canadian stations often aired TV programs earlier than American stations did ("pre-release"); since Canadian viewers could often pick up American transmissions directly, this avoided competing with the American stations for viewers and advertising revenue. [1]

Production[]

Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are largely shot in Canada, particularly in and around Toronto, both in studios and on location. As a result, many of their cast members are Canadian (see Canadian for a list of Canadian Star Trek actors). Also, Star Trek Beyond was filmed in Vancouver.

SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" is the first Star Trek production to have scenes set in Canada. The choice was made to set the episode in Toronto to avoid the expense of either moving filming to location in New York (the original choice of setting) or redressing Toronto locations to look like New York.

"The Cage" maps[]

The maps used in the original "The Cage" were published in the early 1960s. It is probable that Canada was labeled on two 20th century-era political map of Earth used in the original "The Cage". However, due to the poor quality of the image and the inability to access the source material, this is far from certain.

Decades later, a Central Intelligence Agency map, which was used in the remastered "The Cage", was published either in April 2007 [2] or September 2008 [3]. The difference, which was not noticeable at the resolution of the image from the episode, was the addition of Kosovo, which gained its independence between the releases. The label "Canada" was not legible to the viewer.
