For the Starfleet officer with a similar name, please see Calvin Hudson.

Commander Calvin "Hutch" Hutchinson was a Starfleet officer in the 24th century. He did not care for his first name and couldn't forgive his parents for naming him "Calvin."

Hutchinson enjoyed social situations and was infamous for his love of small talk, although he was oblivious to the fact that it was generally uncomfortable and dull. He had met many Starfleet personnel, including Admiral Mitchell, Captains Conklin and Edwell, and Doctor Beverly Crusher (whom he last saw on Earth in 2365), and had stories about each of them.

Hutchinson was once posted on Tyrellia. Later he was assigned to Admiral Mitchell's staff on Starbase 97 and had been transferred to Arkaria by 2369. He claimed that there was an interesting story behind his assignment there. After assuming command of Arkaria Base, he was responsible for the interior design of a reception area located on the base, which he found difficult because of the challenging lighting in the room.

In 2369, he notoriously hosted gatherings for starship crews visiting the Remmler Array, which the senior staff of the USS Enterprise-D tried to avoid during their stopover that year. Lieutenant Commander Data, however, was extremely interested in the concept of small talk and – after observing Hutchinson's technique for a few minutes – diverted Hutchinson's attention from the other officers, much to their delight. Commander William T. Riker was fascinated that two people could talk about nothing for such an extended period of time.

Hutchinson was shot and killed by a renegade Arkarian when a mercenary group's plot to steal trilithium resin from the Enterprise-D was revealed. (TNG: "Starship Mine")

Commander Hutchinson was played by David Spielberg, with stunts performed by J.P. Romano.
