(written from a Production point of view)
CBS Television Studios (formerly CBS Studios – original – , Paramount Television, CBS Paramount Television and its production arm CBS Paramount Network Television) is a television production company owned by the CBS Corporation (formerly part of the old Viacom) that currently holds the production rights of any future Star Trek television series. It is producing Star Trek: Discovery, released on CBS All Access on 24 September 2017.
The television company was (re)formed as the result of the late 2005 decision, formalized on 17 January 2006, to split up the original Viacom conglomerate (at that time also the owner of Paramount Pictures) into two seperate publicly traded companies: CBS Corporation and a new Viacom. It is currently a subsidiary of CBS Corporation, which now owns the trademarks for Star Trek and all related marks, having it acquired from Paramount Pictures which was put under the ownership of the new Viacom. It meant that after four decades, Paramount not only lost its television division, but in essence also the entire Star Trek franchise (only retaining a license through CBS Corporation to produce theatrical Star Trek films). The new Star Trek: Discovery television series marks the very first time that Paramount is entirely out of the loop of a Star Trek live-action television show.
Having absorbed Desilu in 1967, Paramount Television laid claim to every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series and its subsequent spin-offs for nearly forty years before the old Viacom acquired Paramount Pictures/Television from Gulf+Western in 1994, and merged it later with the original CBS Studios to form "CBS Paramount Television" after acquiring the latter as well in 2000. (CBS) Paramount Television has never been a separate company within any of the holding groups, but a dependent division of Paramount Pictures until the 2005 old Viacom split decision into two separate companies.
On that occasion, the former television division was split into two seperate subsidiaries, the present broadcast television network "CBS" – essentially the original CBS Studios – and the television production company "CBS Paramount Television", for the time being perpetuating the name the former television division already had. Currently known under its latest iteration, CBS Corporation changed the name of the television production company to "CBS Television Studios" in 2009, when the Network Television unit was merged with the main television production subsidiary.
CBS Television Studios presently also consists of its domestic distribution arm, CBS Television Distribution, and its global distribution arm, CBS Studios International.
