Beatty studied acting at the California Institute of the Arts and attended a Shakespeare workshop with Patrick Stewart at the Paramount soundstage. He appeared in several stage plays including the title role in "Hamlet" at the Tribal Players, "Julius Caesar" and "Spunk" at the Mark Taper Forum, and "Romeo and Juliet" at the Shakespeare Center.
Beatty started acting on screen in the late 1980s and was featured in the crime drama Colors (1988, with Seymour Cassel, Tina Lifford, Sharon Schaffer, and Tony Todd), the television drama The Women of Brewster Place (1989, with Paul Winfield and William Frankfather), the drama Gross Anatomy (1989, with Clyde Kusatsu, J. Patrick McNamara, Kay E. Kuter, Steven Culp, Gordon Clapp, Tracee Cocco, and Dana Vitatoe), the crime thriller Falling Down (1993, with Pat Romano, John Fleck, Brent Hinkley, and Jeffrey Byron), the television drama Barbarians at the Gate (1993, with Joanna Cassidy, Raye Birk, Bruce French, Ron Canada, Mark Harelik, Jeanne Mori, and Zachary Benjamin), and the television thriller In the Line of Duty: The Price of Vengeance (1994, with Dean Stockwell, Brian Markinson, Tina Lifford, Susanna Thompson, Sharon Lawrence, Ron Taylor, and Rick Scarry) beside guest roles in episodes of China Beach (1988, with Jeff Kober, Robert Picardo, Concetta Tomei, Megan Gallagher, and Jana Marie Hupp), Nasty Boys (1990, with Craig Hurley and Clarence Williams III), and The Antagonists (1991).
Following his appearance on Star Trek, Beatty appeared in episodes of NYPD Blue (1994, with Sharon Lawrence, Gordon Clapp, Daniel Benzali, Mary Mara, James Noah, and Brigid Brannagh) and ER (1996, with Jane Daly, Lily Mariye, and Jim O'Heir), in the comedy Dunston Checks In (1996, with Jason Alexander, Michelle Bonilla, Frank Kopyc, Ernest Perry, Jr., Rita Minor, Paula Malcomson, and Frank Welker), the television drama Soul of the Game (1996, with Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Gina Ravera, Jerry Hardin, Richard Riehle, Mimi Cozzens, Erika Flores, Holiday Freeman, Bob Minor, and Jeff Coopwood), and in the crime drama The Negotiator (1998, with Tim Kelleher, Jack Shearer, Brad Blaisdell, and Rick Scarry).
More recently, Beatty had guest parts in Squatters (2010), Franklin & Bash (2011, with Malcolm McDowell, John de Lancie, and Ivar Brogger), Grey's Anatomy (2011), Southland (2013), House of Lies (2014), Glee (2014), Straight Outta Compton (2015), and Dope (2015).
