A booby trap was a type of device meant to kill or injure a person. They usually had some means to lure victims into them and then make it difficult to extricate themselves from it.
In 2151, Charles Tucker III claimed that Captain Archer had rigged the vault onboard the Enterprise (NX-01) with booby traps, so he volunteered to go first before Ulis and Muk. (ENT: "Acquisition")
In 2153, the Xindi booby-trapped a biorifle, so it would overload and then explode aboard the Enterprise, but Tucker was able to beam it into space before it exploded. (ENT: "The Shipment")
In 2366, a Menthar booby trap disabled the USS Enterprise-D nearly resulting in the loss of all hands until Geordi La Forge managed to restore the systems aided by a holographic version of Leah Brahms, a designer of the Enterprise. (TNG: "Booby Trap")
