Beryllium is an alkaline earth metal, one of the basic atomic elements.

In its crystalline form, beryllium is translucent deep reddish purple in color. Such crystals are the standard currency in Spatial Grid 539 in the Delta Quadrant. Even a small crystal is quite valuable; there are several species who would trade a fleet of starships for a crystal of a few cubic centimeters. In 2376, Abbadon unwittingly traded Neelix, amongst other trinkets, an block containing a beryllium crystal for a few plasma couplings. Neither realized the value of the crystal until Seven of Nine identified it, and Neelix later bartered it back to Abbadon in exchange for information about the ship Alice. (VOY: "Alice")
- The crystal may have been the mineral beryl, which is a significant source of beryllium on Earth. The red variety is the rarest, and a gem-quality crystal is extremely valuable.
