Roast of beef

Roast of beef

Beef was the term for the meat butchered off of an Earth cow or related livestock.

In 2267, Korob created a table consisting of several foods, including a giant roast of beef, roast peacock, and boar's head. (TOS: "Catspaw")

In 2367, while re-enacting a scene from A Christmas Carol on the holodeck of the USS Enterprise-D, Lieutenant commander Data, as Ebenezer Scrooge, told Jacob Marley 's ghost that he didn't believe in him, for "You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato." (TNG: "Devil's Due")

"Beef" was also a slang term for a complaint on Earth in the 1920s. In 2268, after leaving Sigma Iotia II, James T. Kirk asked a brooding Leonard McCoy what his beef was, having already heard an equally perturbed Spock out. (TOS: "A Piece of the Action") It continued to be used as a slang term in this sense on Earth as late as 1997, when it was used by rapper and record producer John Forté in the second verse of the song "We Trying to Stay Alive". (DIS: "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad")
