The barrowbug was a type of bug native to Bajor that lived in mounds.

Bajoran Resistance fighter Lupaza once compared a successful attack on the Cardassian Third Assault Group with "kicking over a mound of barrowbugs." (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water")

In 2381, Kira Nerys affectionately called Shaxs a "scarred-up old barrowbug." (LD: "Hear All, Trust Nothing")

In the Star Trek: Terok Nor novel Day of the Vipers, barrowbugs are compared to Earth cockroaches. However, they are about the size of a humanoid's fist and spit acidic venom.

According to the RPG sourcebook Creatures, barrowbugs are only 0.1cm in size. They normally feed on Bajoran plants which have a high mineral content, but if accidentally transported to other planets with lower plant nutrients, they will defoliate entire regions to sate themselves. Barrowbugs have a stinger to defend against predators.
