Bajoran ranks

The rank system of the Bajoran Militia bears some resemblance to various Earth infantry ranking systems.

General

A General in 2370.

General is a flag officer rank which may be equivalent to a Starfleet admiral. Generals wear a dress tunic with epaulets, and wear two gold insignia pins on either side of their collar.

Colonel

Colonel may be equivalent to a Starfleet captain (However, when Colonel Kira Nerys was granted a commission by Starfleet, she received the rank of Commander). Colonels wear a silver Bajoran symbol on the collar as a rank insignia.

Field colonel

A Field colonel in 2370.

Field colonel may be equivalent to a Starfleet commander. In Earth terminology, Field Rank refers collectively to the ranks of Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel in the army or marines, and also Brigadier in applicable armies; a Field Commission is given to an enlisted soldier to make them a Commissioned Officer. Field colonels wear a gold Bajoran insignia with one hemisphere colored black as a rank insignia.

Major

Major may be equivalent to a Starfleet lieutenant commander. Majors wear a solid gold-colored rank insignia on their collar.

First lieutenant may be equivalent to a Starfleet lieutenant junior grade. First lieutenants are often refered to as "lieutenant."

Second lieutenant may be equivalent to a Starfleet ensign. Second lieutenants are often refered to as simply "lieutenant."

Ensign may be equivalent to the Starfleet rank of the same name.

The un-named Bajoran officer from DS9: "Dramatis Personae" was identified as an Ensign in the credits.

Bajoran enlisted personnel are given rates similar to Starfleet. They generally do not wear rank insignia and their rank is given by both their collar size and the color of their clothing.

Background

The Star Trek Encyclopedia, second edition, proposes that the ranks below major are captain, lieutenant, lieutenant junior grade, and ensign. This system presents variant pins that never appeared on set and quizzically mixes the army ranks with navy terminology -- lieutenant junior grade and ensign, which were never used or referred to during the series.
