A horseless carriage was a wide variety of automobiles that was manufactured on Earth during the 1890s. They were so named, because a horse was not required to operate the vehicle, as previous "carriages" were.

Data, who had been transported to 19th century San Francisco, met a bellboy who was enthusiastic about horseless carriages, and he even tried to get Data to go into business with him, telling him that he could sell the cars, while Data builds them. (TNG: "Time's Arrow")
