An automatic scanner was a form of scanner technology used on Federation Class F shuttlecraft during the mid-23rd century. Mounted on a movable arm, it was spheroid in shape, with a gridded view finder, and an adjustable viewfinder that could be used to view phenomena outside the shuttlecraft.

In 2267, Spock utilized his automatic scanner in piloting the Galileo back to the USS Enterprise. En route, he requested that Captain James T. Kirk refer to his automatic scanner when he discovered the Companion approaching their shuttle. (TOS: "Metamorphosis")

An automatic scanner was also later used as a type of surveillance device present on unmanned monitor posts during the 24th century.

In 2364, the theft of a T-9 energy converter by Ferengi from one such post on Gamma Tauri IV was recorded by automatic scanners there. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")
