Multiple realities
(covers information from several alternate timelines)

Auto-navigation, or autopilot, was a form of automatic navigation that did not require the intervention of a pilot or helmsman. This type of procedure was normally performed by a computer.

In the mirror universe in January 2155, Jonathan Archer used auto-navigation to lock the ISS Enterprise on a course for the Vintaak system in order to investigate the recovery by the Tholians of the USS Defiant. Archer encrypted the controls with a random code, making it impossible to release auto-navigation before Enterprise reached its destination. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly")

In an alternate reality, Captain Richard Robau of the USS Kelvin ordered Lieutenant George Kirk to use the auto pilot and set a collision course with the Narada after the Kelvin was critically damaged in battle. The auto pilot experienced a malfunction following another attack by the Narada, forcing now-acting captain George Kirk to manually fly the Kelvin into the Narada while he remained on board in order to allow the fleeing shuttlecraft to escape. (Star Trek)

After an encounter with a black star in 2267 that sent the USS Enterprise back in time to 1969, warp engines became non-operational so Montgomery Scott overrode the automatic helm setting to hold the ship in orbit of Earth on impulse power. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday")

In 2268, the Enterprise's boarding party discovered the derelict USS Exeter's helm was left on automatic while in orbit of Omega IV. (TOS: "The Omega Glory")

While on their way back to the USS Enterprise-D in 2369, Data activated the automatic helm control of the runabout and joined the fellow officers in the aft section of the ship. The computer voice verified this order. (TNG: "Timescape")

In 2370, Jake Sisko and Nog tried to disengage the USS Rio Grande's autopilot and plot a course back to Deep Space 9 to get help to rescue Benjamin Sisko and Quark from the Jem'Hadar, but couldn't because neither of them didn't know the authorization code. They then work on shutting off the autopilot system and are successful and they tell the computer to lay in a course for the Bajoran wormhole, but the computer couldn't as the autopilot system was now offline, so they attempt to fly the runabout manually. (DS9: "The Jem'Hadar")

In an alternate 2373, Yedrin Dax supplied the crew of the USS Defiant with the navigation logs from a crash that had stranded the ship on a planet in the Gamma Quadrant. Yedrin instructed Jadzia Dax to download the logs into Defiant's auto-pilot in order to recreate the accident. (DS9: "Children of Time")

That same year, a shuttlecraft carrying The Doctor, Harry Kim and Ahni Jetal was attacked by an unknown species. An individual of this species attacked Kim and Jetal with a weapon which caused their spinal cords to deteriorate. The Doctor set auto-navigation to return the shuttle to the USS Voyager so that he could assess their condition. (VOY: "Latent Image")

While attempting to move the USS Equinox away from the USS Voyager when its warp core was about to explode, Kathryn Janeway urged Rudolph Ransom to set auto-navigation and beam aboard her ship. Ransom refused, claiming there was no time, and perished in the explosion. (VOY: "Equinox, Part II")
