He received training as an actor from L.A. Casting in Los Angeles, California, and from The Network Studio in San Francisco, California. Hemphill made his first film appearance as an extra in Contact (1997, featuring Geoffrey Blake, Robin Gammell, and Tucker Smallwood). He returned to film approximately ten years later, working as a background performer in numerous projects, including Four Christmases (with cinematography by Jeffrey L. Kimball), What Happens in Vegas (2008, starring Michelle Krusiec), Eagle Eye (2008, produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and starring William Sadler), and Bedtime Stories (starring Keri Russell, with production design by Linda DeScenna). He has also appeared as an extra on CSI: NY (starring Robert Joy), CSI: Miami, Shark (starring Jeri Ryan, in an episode with Jonathan Banks), Desperate Housewives (starring Teri Hatcher and the voice of Brenda Strong and directed by Larry Shaw), and Bones.

Star Trek was Hemphill's second film starring Chris Pine; the first was Bottle Shock (2008). Hemphill's acting credits also include supporting roles in the independent films The Rains of Astoria and The Mandalorian Legacy and featured appearances on TV shows such as Without a Trace (starring Enrique Murciano, in an episode with Jennifer S.
