Anthropology is the study of humans, and can be broken down into Physical anthropology and Cultural anthropology, which themselves have further sub groups. After first contact it seems to have been expanded to include other humanoid species. The Archaeology and anthropology officer was a position on Starfleet starships in the 23rd century. Anthropology was also a general course taught at Starfleet Academy during the mid-24th Century. (TNG: "The Game")
A three-man anthropology team was on Mintaka III in 2366 hiden behind a duck blind. The duck blind failed when the reactor suffered a serious malfunction, and the observer team were discovered by the Mintakans. (TNG: "Who Watches the Watchers?")
