"I should warn you, I've always been attracted to older women."
– Jean-Luc Picard, 2375 (Star Trek: Insurrection)

Anij was a Ba'ku female who was over three hundred years old, although she only appeared to be in her late 30s/early 40s.

Anij was one of the leading members of the Ba'ku who worked closely with the crew of the USS Enterprise-E when their planet was threatened, in 2375, by the Son'a.

Anij and Captain Jean-Luc Picard openly expressed a mutual interest in each other. During her time with Picard, Anij demonstrated the ability to slow down time for both of them when engaged together in a moment of deep, personal connection.

While escaping from the Son'a, Anij and Picard became trapped under rock debris due to a cave-in and Anij was critically injured. While holding Picard's hand, Anij managed to slow down time around them long enough for the rest of the Enterprise crew to reach them.

Before leaving the planet, Picard told Anij that he had 318 days of shore leave coming, and he intended to use them. (Star Trek: Insurrection)

Anij was played by actress Donna Murphy.
In a character description that was written by Michael Piller and was used by Casting Directors Junie Lowry-Johnson and Ron Surma to seek a performer to play the role, Anij was described thus; "A beautiful, charismatic woman of quiet strength, about 40 years old, healthy, trim and in the prime of life. She takes a special pride of taking contrary positions to the status quo of her people, who are known as the Ba’ku [....] She is suspicious and antagonistic to Picard when he arrives on her world, but ultimately falls in love with him as he defends her people facing overwhelming odds against a terrible conspiracy that will destroy them. She has special powers of inner awareness that will help change Picard’s life." (Fade In: From Idea to Final Draft, The Writing of Star Trek Insurrection)
