The Altair was an the primary star in the inhabited Altair system, which was of strategic importance to the Federation in the 23rd century. (TOS: "Amok Time") The location of Altair was depicted on a Federation star chart. The system was located near Tau Ceti. (TNG: "Conspiracy")
Altair, also known as Alpha Aquila, is a real star. According to the video game Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, the USS Constellation and the Klingon flagship, IKS K'lirta, engaged in combat at Alpha Aquila VII, prior to the Organian Peace Treaty.
According to Star Trek: Star Charts (page 44), Altair was located in Sector 001 in the Alpha Quadrant.
