Colony Alpha V (also called Colony 5 or Earth colony 5) was the name of a Federation colony in the mid-23rd century. The colony was located on the fifth planet in the Alpha planetary system. This system was located in the Alpha Quadrant. This was one of two inhabited planets in this system; the other was Alpha III. This colony was supervised by a governor.

In 2266, the starship Enterprise set course for Colony 5, with the intention of taking Charles Evans, a young man who had been stranded on the planet Thasus for seventeen years, to be reunited with his closest living relatives there. However, when it was discovered that Charlie had dangerous psychokinetic powers, which he selfishly used without regard for the well-being of others, it became evident that it was too dangerous to take Charlie to the colony. Charlie, however, used his powers to take control of the Enterprise, wishing to arrive at the colony and unleash his powers there. Fortunately, the Thasians, who had taken care of Charlie after his parents had been killed and who had given him his powers in the first place so that he could survive, arrived while the Enterprise was en route, and took Charlie back to Thasus, where he would no longer be a danger to others. (TOS: "Charlie X", "Court Martial")

Background

Humans founded colonies on M-class planets. Conjecturally, Alpha V might be M-class. (TNG: "Justice")

The location of the Tholian Assembly and Romulus on "The Explored Galaxy" wall chart

Prior to 2290, exploration by Federation starships was largely confined to the Alpha Quadrant. These ships, slow by 24th century standards, were charting a quadrant that was largely unexplored. Ships, such as the USS Enterprise, became renowned for their discoveries. By the mid-24th century, the Federation had expanded into areas charted by these ships. For exploration into the Beta Quadrant, ships had to leave the comfort of Federation space and travel into the unknown.(Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice"; VOY: "Flashback") The state of exploration in the late 23rd century was depicted in the Federation star chart "The Explored Galaxy". Many locations discovered or known to the Enterprise and her crew were located between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. Both locations were identified in DS9: "The Search, Part II", "Call to Arms" as being located in this quadrant. The chart, first seen chronologically in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game", and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

The location of Alpha V was not depicted on the chart.

Star Trek: Star Charts

  • Alpha System: The system was located in or near Federation space, in the Alpha Quadrant. This was a single star system. Alpha was a G-class star with a magnitude of +5, which was the same brightness as Sol. ("United Federation of Planets III")
