The Almatha sector was an area of Cardassian space that borders the Demilitarized Zone under the command of Gul Toran. Border outposts 47 and 61 were located in this sector.
In 2371, after Thomas Riker stole the USS Defiant, his entry point into Cardassian space was through the Almatha sector. (DS9: "Defiant")
"AL-mah-thuh" was the pronunciation for this sector's name from the script pronunciation guide.
According to StarTrek.com, this sector was named after the star system Almatha.
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 47) and the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Stellar Cartography", pp. 18-19; "Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"; "The Dominion War: Strategy and Battles, 2373-75"), the Almatha sector was located in the Alpha Quadrant. It was named after a K-class star. According to a map of the Cardassian Union – prepared by an anonymous astrography clerk, from the Cardassian Central Archives, in 2364 – Almatha was identified as a Cardassian system.
