Algae are photosynthetic, eukaryotic organisms. Algae were once considered to be in the plant kingdom, but now are classified under protista.
The uniforms worn by Starfleet personnel in the 23rd century were made from xenylon, a material which was made from processing a type algae. (TAS:"The Terratin Incident")
