The surface of Alfa 177

Alfa 177 was an uninhabited planet. This was the homeworld for a species of dog. (TOS: "The Enemy Within")

This planet had a nighttime temperature that reached 120° below zero. The planet was capable of supporting life despite this, and it was also rich in a soft yellow magnetic ore with highly unusual properties.

In 2266, the USS Enterprise was on a specimen-gathering mission to this planet. While there, they brought aboard one of the dogs native to the planet. Also, a member of the landing party became covered with the yellow magnetic ore, which damaged the transporters and caused the device to divide transporter signals. (TOS: "The Enemy Within")

The planets location in the explored region of the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country production art)

According to, Alfa 177 was a Class M world. [1]
In the star chart "The Explored Galaxy", Alfa 177 was positioned between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. Both were identified in DS9: "Call to Arms" as being located in the Alpha Quadrant. However, to date, there has been no direct connection between the planet and the quadrant.
This planet's name was spelled as "Alfa" on screen in the "The Explored Galaxy" star chart, in the Star Trek Encyclopedia (2nd ed., p. 6), Star Trek Maps (pg. 22) and in the Star Trek: The Original Series 365 (p. 043). However, the The Star Trek Compendium (4th ed., p. 34) used "Alpha".
