Memory Alpha

Alfa 177 was an uninhabited planet in the Alpha Quadrant. This planet had a nighttime temperature that reached 120º below zero. The planet was capable of supporting life despite this, and it was also rich in a soft yellow magnetic ore with highly unusual properties. The atmosphere was capable of supporting humanoid life-forms.

In 2266, the USS Enterprise was on a specimen-gathering mission to this planet. While there, they brought aboard a member of a species of dogs native to the planet. Also, a member of the landing party became covered with the yellow magnetic ore, which damaged the transporters and caused the device to divide transporter signals. (TOS: "The Enemy Within")

The location of Alfa 177 in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

"The Explored Galaxy" was a map of charted space in the Alpha Quadrant. The Tholian Assembly and Romulus/Remus were identified in dialog as being located in this quadrant. (DS9: "The Search, Part I", "Call to Arms") This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were: TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game" and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".
This planet's name was spelled as "Alfa" on the star chart, in the Star Trek Encyclopedia (2nd ed., p. 6), and in the Star Trek: The Original Series 365 (p. 043). However, the The Star Trek Compendium (4th ed., p. 34) used "Alpha".
