His name was recorded in the engineering systems crew on USS Pasteur's dedication plaque when the ship was built by the Skywalker Division at Marin County Starfleet Yards. (TNG: "All Good Things...")

He served the same position at Earth Station McKinley during the construction of the USS Voyager. His name was recorded on the vessel's dedication plaque when the ship was commissioned on stardate 48038. (Star Trek: Voyager)

He later served as a shipyard engineer during the construction of the USS Prometheus as well, at the Beta Antares Ship Yards. His name was also recorded on that vessel's dedication plaque, when the ship was commissioned on stardate 50749.5. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle")

Alex Smutko, who was listed on various pieces of background artwork, was named for set decorator Al Smutko.
